Who this is

I'm not a company — this is a personal project. I live on the Isle of Wight and got fed up with tide times being scattered across different sites, none of which showed everything (weather and tides, for every beach) in one place. I built this for my own family's use and I'm sharing it publicly in case it's useful to anyone else.

No affiliation

This site is not affiliated with the UK Hydrographic Office, the Met Office, or Open-Meteo. It simply displays data pulled from their public services and APIs.

Time zone

All times on this site — tide times, sunrise/sunset, everything — are UK local time (Europe/London), which automatically switches between GMT (UTC+0) in winter and British Summer Time, BST (UTC+1), on the actual UK clock-change dates each year (the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October). This isn't a fixed offset that would drift wrong outside BST - it's calculated correctly for whatever date is being shown, all year round.

Data sources

How the numbers are actually worked out

Days 1–7 are real Admiralty predictions for the 9 stations listed above.

Beaches that aren't one of those 9 exact stations show a time and height interpolated between their two nearest real neighbouring stations, based on the actual measured difference between those two stations on each day — not an independent prediction for that exact spot. These are marked with a * wherever they appear in the tide tables.

Cowes has a genuine double high water on most days (a real, well-documented Solent phenomenon). It's shown as measured for Cowes itself; nearby beaches (East Cowes, Osborne Bay, Hamstead, Newtown Bay, Thorness Bay, Gurnard, Egypt Point) show the same effect fading with distance from Cowes, rather than the full, undiminished double tide. On any day this occurs, both highs are shown together in that one High column (marked ), rather than one being hidden — the table still only ever has 4 columns.

The dip between the two highs is estimated, not measured. In reality the water falls slightly between the first and second high water before rising again — Southampton's port authority describes a "pronounced fall between first and second High Water stands". The chart draws that dip, but you should know exactly what it is: the source data only publishes high and low water events, and the small minimum between two highs is not one of them, so its depth has never been published. What the chart draws is an illustrative estimate, sized at a small fraction of that day's own high-to-low range so it grows on spring tides and shrinks on neaps, matching the documented behaviour rather than being a fixed number stamped on every day. It is kept deliberately shallow, because the central Solent around Cowes is documented as behaving more like a prolonged stand than a deep trough (further east along the Island's north coast it is not even a true double high). Treat the shape of that dip as indicative only. The two high water times and heights either side of it are real published predictions and are not altered by this, and no synthetic point is ever shown as a marker on the chart or listed in any tide table.

Bembridge Harbour is a similarly restricted, local reading — a small harbour with a near-drying low water, not representative of the open coast around it. Only St Helens beach uses it directly. Bembridge, Whitecliff Bay, Seagrove Bay, and Priory Bay instead use the nearby Foreland (Lifeboat Slip) station, which better represents the open coast there.

Days 8–14 are not real predictions at all — they're a projection based on the pattern in the real 7-day data (the same tidal interval and spring/neap trend, carried forward). These are always clearly marked "Estimated" wherever they appear.

Most days show 4 tide events (High/Low/High/Low), but you'll sometimes see only 3. This is expected, not missing data: the real tidal cycle is about 12 hours 25 minutes between successive high (or low) waters, so 4 events span roughly 24 hours 50 minutes — a little more than a calendar day. Because of this, the timing of all four daily tides drifts about 50 minutes later each day, and roughly every couple of weeks that drift pushes what would be the 4th tide of the day past midnight, so it counts toward the following day instead, leaving that day with only 3. These days are marked in the tide tables.

There's a narrower, related limitation specific to today's page only. Isle of Wight beaches that aren't a real tide station themselves are interpolated from the nearest one, shifted by a small, consistent time offset. That works well across the whole 14-day view - except for today specifically, since the free tidal data only ever covers today onward, never yesterday. If today happens to be a short (3-tide) day for the real station a beach is interpolated from, the beach's own true tide could in principle have an extra event in the very first hours of the morning that the station's data doesn't - and with no direct access to yesterday's data, there'd be nothing to reconstruct that event from. This site solves it by retaining each day's own real data and reusing it as genuine "yesterday" context the next day, so in practice this only ever affects the very first day this site was ever run (or after a genuine gap of a day or more without it running) - from the second day onward, real context is always available. On the rare occasion it does apply, affected beaches are marked §.

All times are rounded to the nearest minute.

Not for navigation or safety-critical use

Adjusted or estimated tide figures — anything calculated from a time or height difference to a nearby station, or projected beyond the real 7-day window — should not be used for navigation. In an emergency, use the Coastguard (999, ask for Coastguard) or the Met Office's official warnings, not this site.

Weather is inherently uncertain

Forecasts, especially further out, can be wrong. Treat the 14-day view as a rough guide for planning, not a guarantee — particularly for the later days.

Beach type & lifeguard information

The beach guide page (sandy/shingle/rocky type, and which beaches have organised lifeguard cover) is compiled from public tourism and geological sources, not an official safety survey. Some beaches have an individually-sourced description; others are classified from the general character of that stretch of coast where no specific source was found — the guide marks the difference clearly. Lifeguard season dates and hours shift year to year and can go out of date — always check current signage on the day.

Sea conditions

Sea temperature and wave height come from Open-Meteo's free Marine Weather API, which only forecasts 7 days regardless of what's requested — so, like the tide data, this is only ever shown for the real week, never the estimated days 8-14. Shown at the top of each day's page as a brief summary for the Island's three genuinely distinct coastal exposures: the sheltered Solent (north coast), the open Channel to the east (Sandown Bay), and the open Channel to the west and south (West Wight and the Undercliff) — not an individual reading for every exact beach, since conditions are broadly similar within each of those three stretches.

Moon phase

Moon phase uses a standard offline astronomical approximation - no API needed. It counts the days since a known reference new moon (6 January 2000) and divides by the Moon's average synodic month (29.53058770576 days, the time from one new moon to the next) to work out where in the cycle a given date falls. This is an average-cycle approximation, accurate to within about half a day, not full ephemeris precision - fine for knowing roughly what the Moon looks like, not for anything needing minute-level timing.

This isn't just a nice-to-know detail - it directly explains something the tide model already does. Spring tides (bigger tidal range, higher highs and lower lows) happen around new and full moon, when the Sun and Moon line up and their pulls combine; neap tides (smaller range) happen around the first and last quarter, when their pulls partly cancel out. The estimated period (days 8-14) already fits a 14.77-day cycle - exactly half a synodic month - to project this pattern forward; the Moon phase shown here is that same real-world cycle made visible.

Sunrise & sunset beach picks

Sunrise/sunset times come from Open-Meteo, accurate to the minute. The suggested beach for each is picked from a shortlist of Isle of Wight beaches that genuinely face the right way to see it over open water — not every beach qualifies. The Island's north coast faces mainland England a few miles across the Solent, and the south coast (the Undercliff) faces due south; in UK summer, sunrise happens well north of due east and sunset well north of due west, so neither of those coastlines has a clean open- sea view of either event. Only the east coast (Sandown Bay — Yaverland, Sandown, Shanklin, Whitecliff Bay, Bembridge, St Helens) genuinely faces sunrise, and only the west coast (Compton Bay, Freshwater Bay, Totland Bay, Colwell Bay, Brook Bay, Brighstone Bay, Atherfield Point, Alum Bay) genuinely faces sunset. Alum Bay in particular is an excellent sunset spot right by the Needles, but its chairlift typically stops running mid- afternoon — well before sunset — so a walk down the wooden steps is the realistic option if it's picked; this is called out on the day itself whenever Alum Bay is the suggestion. Within the shortlist, the specific beach picked each day prefers one where the tide isn't fully in at that moment. Suggested arrival times allow roughly 20 minutes before the event itself.

Conditions for each event (clear/partly cloudy/mostly cloudy) are assessed independently, using the actual forecast cloud cover and rain chance at that specific hour — not one whole-day figure applied to both. This means a morning that's forecast rainy but expected to clear by evening correctly shows a poor sunrise message alongside a good sunset message, rather than one blanket statement for the whole day.

Data freshness

The tide data currently on this site was last successfully refreshed from the Admiralty API at 1:01 am, friday 18 september. If this looks outdated, it usually means either the UKHO API is temporarily unavailable or the monthly call allowance has been reached — the site keeps serving the last good data it has rather than showing nothing, so it's worth checking back later.

Privacy

No accounts, no tracking beyond basic hosting logs (the kind any web server keeps by default), no ads.
